Yarm1914 believe that Mattias Lynch was born in 1882 in 4 Ugglebarnaby village to Robert Welforn aged 38 from Crathorne and Anne Elizabeth Welford (nee Watson) aged 30. He had sisters Mary aged 21, Anastasia aged and living at a servant in the Turnbull household in The Mount Hawsker near Whitby, Margaret aged 2.He had one brother Robert aged 4. In 1891 the family were living in the Manor House and Mary was a dressmaker. 3 sons had been born, James in 1884, George W in 1886 and John in 1889. A daughter Hilda had been born the previous year but Margaret died in 1888 aged 8. Robert was a successful bootmaker as he had his son Robert as an apprentice along with Albert Leng aged 18 from Stockton. Robert had learned his trade in Crathorne from his father Robert who was a shoemaker journeyman. The Welfords are a well established family from Crathorne. There is a possibility that in the 1901 census Mattias was recorded as Mathew Walford, a butcher's apprentice to Henry Richardson, a farmer and butcher in Sleights. In 1909 he married Mary Cecilia Breckon and had their first son Matthias the following year and was supporting his neice Anastasia Roe aged 10, daughter of his sister Anaestasia who married Charles Stranger Roe in Whitby in 1899. Matthias worked as a butcher in the Co-op and lived in an 8 roomed house in Aisalby Road. By the time he signed up in 1915 in Stockton, he recorded Prospect Cottage on Aislaby Road in Yarm as his address and he had two daughters Cecelia born in 1911 and Mary.
